Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is one of the Ionian Islands in Greece, with a rich and varied history influenced by different civilisations over the centuries. Here’s an overview:

Ancient Times

  • According to Greek mythology, Zakynthos was named after Zakynthos, the son of Dardanus, the king of Troy.
  • Archaeological evidence suggests the island was inhabited from the Neolithic period.
  • During the Mycenaean era (1600 – 1100 BC), Zakynthos developed trade with Crete and other Greek regions.
  • The island later became part of the Delian League under Athenian influence in the 5th century BC.

Roman and Byzantine Periods

  • In 217 BC, Zakynthos fell under the control of the Macedonian king Philip V.
  • It later became a Roman province in 146 BC, remaining relatively peaceful and prosperous.
  • During the Byzantine era (330 – 1204 AD), Zakynthos suffered frequent pirate raids and invasions.

Venetian Rule (1484 – 1797)

  • The Venetians took control of Zakynthos in 1484, and the island flourished economically and culturally.
  • The Venetians introduced a feudal system, but they also promoted arts, literature, and music, leading to the island’s distinct cultural identity.
  • The famous Zakynthian School of poetry emerged during this period.

French, Russian, and British Rule (1797 – 1864)

  • In 1797, Zakynthos briefly fell under French Republican rule after Napoleon’s conquest.
  •  In 1798, the Russians and Ottomans took over, forming the Septinsular Republic (1800 – 1807), the first form of Greek self-rule in modern times.
  • The French regained control in 1807, but in 1809, the British captured the island and incorporated it into the United States of the Ionian Islands (1815 – 1864).
  • The British improved infrastructure but faced resistance from local nationalists who wanted union with Greece.

Union with Greece and Modern History (1864 – Present)

  • Zakynthos, along with the rest of the Ionian Islands, was united with Greece in 1864.
  • During World War II, the island was occupied by Italian and later German forces.
  • In 1953, a devastating earthquake destroyed most of Zakynthos Town, but the island was rebuilt.
